A
lobster Romeo hopefully ascends a stairway of treasure coins
-- replicas of originals found on the wreck of the Spanish galleon,
Atocha. Awaiting him, hiding demurely beneath a giant
silver shell, is his Juliette. In the center of the base, a giant
silver starfish with a beacon of blue topaz lights their way,
while two golden horseshoe crabs gossip nearby.
Their
undersea world is a collage of silver shells, bits of coral,
and starfish, many cast from originals found on beaches in Key
West. Around the base (from right to left) is a progressive border
of treasure coin replicas, scallop shells, sand dollars, and
-- in the back, silver shark's teeth.
On
the right-center of the base, covered by an openwork canopy of
starfish and scallops, is a blue enameled pool filled with white
cultured pearls . The bottom of the pool is perforated with tiny
openings over which the transparent blue enamel is fired, allowing
light from a concealed lighting system to pass through. (See
